Introduction

The revelation of Jesus as the Good Shepherd who is one with the Father leaves no middle ground. In John 10:31–42, the implicit tension of Solomon’s Porch erupts into open hostility. The religious leaders recognize the magnitude of His claim” I and My Father are one”—and immediately pick up stones to execute Him for blasphemy.

Yet, as we will see in this study, no human anger can derail the divine timetable. Christ slips from their hands once more, crossing the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, where many who had open hearts came to Him and believed.

In today’s message, we will examine four key movements in this passage and their broader biblical connections:

  1. The Accusation & Threat (vv. 31–33)
  2. The Defense of Divine Sonship (vv. 34–38)
  3. The Sovereign Escape (v. 39)
  4. The Harvest Beyond the Jordan (John 10:40–42)

Scripture Reading: John 10:31-42 (NKJV)

31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods”’? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 Therefore, they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The Believers Beyond Jordan

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

Section I: The Accusation & Threat of Stoning (John 10:31–33)

Scripture: “Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, ‘Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?’ The Jews answered Him, saying, ‘For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.’” — John 10:31–33

1. The Blindness of Religious Rage

Anger, when allowed to fester into rage, acts as a spiritual blindfold. It shuts down reason, hardens the heart, and severs our capacity to discern truth.
